UP Tacloban statistics whiz declared as 18th PSQ Regional Champion
Out of the 19 contenders from the different colleges and universities in the region, Mark Jeffrey Sambalilo Diaz, a BS Computer Science freshman stude from the University of the Philippines, Tacloban City was declared the 18th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) Regional Champion.
Held last November 12, 2009 at the AVR Hall of Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU), Tacloban City, all the 16 contestants underwent the easy level (ROUND 1) of the quiz. After the moderate level (ROUND 2) scores were tabulated leaving 7 contestants to carry on over the difficult level (ROUND 3).
After the 3 intricate rounds, Kurt Jerome Obispo still from the UP Visayas-Tacloban came out as 3rd Placer. Yet, a tie score between Diaz and Felipe Abordo from the Visayas State University in Baybay, Leyte was recorded thus tie-breaking question was administered with the sudden-death rule observed to break the tie. The round dredged up the final result making Diaz the Regional Champion while Abordo as the 2nd Placer. Winners received cash prizes, plaques, certificates and tokens.
On its 18th series, Diaz will represent Region VIII to the PSQ National Championship where he will compete with 16th other Statistics whizzes from the 16 regions in the country which will be held in Manila on December 4, 2009. It was in year 2004 that the region took hold of PSQ NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP title awarded to Ms. Jane Lois de Veyra, a freshman whiz also hailed from UP-Tacloban.
The PSQ Regional Championship successfully unfolded thru the effort and indulgence of the National Statistics Office RO-8 with the unwavering support of the 18th PSQ Regional Steering Committee member-agencies.
Ms. Evangeline M. Paran (Regional Head, NSCB), served as the Quiz Master along with distinguished members of the Board of Judges, Engr. Rolando C. Dimaunahan (retired NSO Regional Director); Ms. Nena Balagot (DepEd) and Mr. Arnaldo T. Amosco (Director, DOST-Eastern Samar). The NSO RO8 as well extends its warmest thanks to Ms. Tito Aure (NSTP Director/Professor of EVSU main campus) for his invaluable contribution as event organizer).
