Statute of St. Vicente Ferrer in Babatngon town stolen by unidentified thieves
TACLOBAN CITY- The Catholic faithful of Babatngon, Leyte were in shock as still undetermined number of robbers carted away an image of Saint Vicente Ferrer, the town’s patron saint, last Friday.
And up to this time, police probers have no idea yet as to who could be the culprits on this incident, Antonio Gular, head of the commission on temporal of the Parish Pastoral Council of the town, said.
The 12-inch statute was estimated to be worth about P40, 000 with its head and hands said to be made of ivory.
“We only learned about the incident when one of the church’s sacristans (altar boy) informed us about it…hours after the incident took place,” Gular said.
According to him, the image was enshrined in a separate structure and located few meters away from the Saint Vicente Ferrer Church.
The incident was immediately reported to the local police, he said. However, up to now, Babatngon probers have yet to identify the culprits.
Gular said that the incident may have took place between four to five a.m. last Friday.
The incident took place while their group was having their “aurora” (early morning procession), he added.
It was learned from him that the stealing of an image of the Saint Vicente Ferrer was the second time to happen.
Sometime in 2003, a bigger image of Saint Vicente Ferrer, believed to be 100 years old, was also stolen. Up to this time, those responsible were never known. (JOEY A. GABIETA) (10/27/09)
