Solon wants Gibo to resolve dispute among Lakas-Kampi members in Northern Samar
TACLOBAN CITY — Northern Samar Representative Paul Daza called on the Defense Secretary Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro, the standard bearer of the ruling Lakas-Kampi-CMD, to resolve this early the dispute in their province involving members of the ruling party as he announced his intention to seek the gubernatorial post.
The solon said that failure to resolve the dispute could lead further defection of party members and throw support to other presidential candidates. The ruling party has already lost a key ally in the region when Biliran Governor Rogelio Espina joined the Nacionalista Party.
Daza cited his own case wherein he could likely face an opponent who also belongs to the ruling Lakas-Kampi-CMD in next year’s elections.
The Northern Samar solon said that it would create “complication” within the party if they themselves would be fighting against each other.
Daza admitted that if this situation would not be solved by Teodoro before the start on the filing of certificates of candidacy, he might end up supporting another presidential candidate.
“That’s my initial position…to support the presidential candidacy of Secretary Teodoro being a majority member at the House. But Gibo has to find a solution to the complicated situation here in Northern Samar,” the solon said.
He was referring to his being a member of the ruling party and yet could face an opponent coming from the party in his quest to become the governor of Northern Samar.
Reports have said that former Representative Harlin Abayon is running for governor in the 2010 elections. Abayon’s wife, Daryl Grace, is a member of the House of Representatives representing the Aangat Tayo party-list group, which is said to be identified with the administration.
The Abayons are allies of Northern Samar Representative Emil Ong, who is also a member of the ruling party. The Dazas and the Ongs are the main political rivals in Northern Samar.
According to Daza, he has to know what would be the decision of Teodoro on his request before he files his certificate of candidacy which is to start on November 20.
Asked if his request would not be granted, Daza said that he would support another presidential candidate. He particularly mentioned Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III of the Liberal Party.
“I have only two options, its only Lakas and Liberal. It’s (between) Noynoy and Gibo,” he said.
Daza’s father, Raul, is a former national president of the Liberal Party.
The solon, who represents the first congressional district of Northern Samar, said that he is “95 percent” sure to run for governor of their province come the 2010 elections.
“I am 95 percent sure. Governor Daza will run for my seat and I will run for governor,” he said.
The elder Daza is now serving out his third and last term. (JOEY A. GABIETA)
