Rep. Chong requests security for peaceful elections in Biliran
TACLOBAN CITY- As the 2010 national and local elections draws near, Cong. Glenn Chong of the lone district of Biliran is asking authorities to also take notice of the peace and order situation in his province.
In an interview with reporters recently, Chong alleged that political related tension is already eminent in the province of Biliran particularly between their family and the Espina clan.
Chong said it is already appropriate that special security attention be given to the province as the Espinas would obviously prevent the Chongs from winning the sentiment and support of most people in Biliran.
“I recommend that Biliran be considered an area of concern. I will bring this matter to the COMELEC as well as to the Philippine Army (PA) and the Philippine National Police (PNP),” Chong said.
He said he is afraid that this political tension would result to some sort of violence that may unnecessarily involve innocent lives.
“I would just like to take certain precautionary measures to protect the people of Biliran and my family also,” Chong explained.
Express learned that Chong is eyeing a re-election next year while his father Charlie Chong is running for governor against former Biliran Congressman Gerryboy Espina.
The first-termer congressman said putting Biliran under the watch list of COMELEC as area of concern would serve best the interest of the people of Biliran.
“With this move, more security personnel such as policemen and soldiers will be deployed to our place to ensure honest and orderly elections,” Chong said.
According to him, it is important that the people of Biliran be given enough freedom to choose and be freed from threats and tension in choosing their leader.
Chong added that the accusation being hurled against him about hiring private armies or militiamen is without sufficient basis and just part of black propaganda.
“I would not be more than willing to invite the presence of soldiers and policemen in the province if I intend to sow violence this coming elections. All we desire is peaceful and smooth elections in our province. I don’t know if the other camp also wants the same,” Chong said. (LEMUEL PAGLIAWAN)
