PWD’s faring high on business venture
TACLOBAN CITY – The goodwill of the city government to extend income generating jobs to Persons with Disabilities (PWD) has at least paid off with the group’s coop now reaping enough income from its chair production venture.
Provided by the city government with a workplace and a start-up capital, the Tacloban Association of Persons with Disabilities Coop (TAPDICO) organized a few months ago with its office located at the City Engineering Office compound, already has its own business related to furniture industry.
In one interview, TAPDICO Manager Juvy Alday disclosed that since embarking on their first project, schools in the towns of Javier and Abuyog in Leyte, have already purchased from them a combined total of 1,950 classroom chairs.
Coming up also, according to Alday, is their second purchase order consisting of 1,300 school chairs which they will start making sooner than the first week of January next year.
Locally, he said, their coop is also bidding for the supply of chairs, tables and cabinets which are for the use of Day Care Centers in the city.
Having their General Assembly recently at the Balyuan Convention Center, Alday called on his sectoral mates to take active role and participation in their organizational activities, as he said that attending such assemblies, enables them to know the rights and privileges accorded them by the government.
City Social Welfare Officer Liliosa Baltazar also voiced the same observation, saying that it is easier to call on the attention of the government if an organization is well organized.
In the same forum, Baltazar also reminded establishment owners in the city to adhere to implementing rules and regulations allowing privilege discounts to PWD’s as mandated by law. (VALENTINO B. LOPEZ)
