Project BEST launched in 1st district of N. Samar
ALLEN, Northern Samar – The Barangay Education Strategic Team or Project BEST of the Department of Education (DepEd) was successfully launched in the first congressional district of this province last Oct. 23 at the Barayong Gymnasium of the Balicuatro College of Arts and Trades here.
DepEd Northern Samar Division Schools Division Superintendent spearheaded the launching of Project BEST and it was attended by the Barangay Captains, School Federated PTA Presidents Sangguniang Kabataan Chairpersons, and Barangay Councilors in change of the Committee on Education, School Administrators and teachers coming from the towns of Allen, Biri, Bobon, Capul, Catarman, Lope De Vega, Lavezares, Rosario, Mondragon, San Jose, Victoria, San Isidro, San Antonio and San Vicente.
Project BEST’s general goal is to achieve Millennium Development Goals for Education by year 2010 in line with Education for All (EFA) 2015.
It specifically aims to involve the Local Government Units (LGU) in terms of increasing the active participation of parents and the academic communities at large, building local level capacity and improving the quality of and access to basic education.
Project BEST is conceptualized by former DepEd Region 8 Director Sol. F. Matugas.
In her message, Supt. Quitalig told the participants, particularly the barangay officials that the leaders of DepEd have recognized the very important role of barangay officials and other local leaders in attaining the goals of education.
Supt. Quitalig pointed out three stages that everyone should undergo in order to carry out a program or project like Project BEST. First was “believing” that a certain project, endeavor or activity is important and needed. Second was “accepting” the responsibility and the third was “acting” or doing the obligation.
She stressed that educating a child will require the entire community.
She challenged everybody specially the barangay officials to implement Project BEST in their respective barangays in order to increase the school participation rate, reduce drop out rate and other school concerns.
In behalf of the local government leaders, Municipal Councilor of Allen, Luis Lao, Chairperson of Education Committee accepted the challenge of Dr. Quitalig.
Councilor Lao stressed that since the school served as the exact replica of the community, the local folks had no reason that they would not cooperate in the implementation of Project BEST.
He also stressed that the school was the life and blood of the people in the community. “To me, the progress of the community depends not upon the richness of its natural resources nor upon the beauty and grandeur of its buildings or houses, but to me, what constitutes the genuine progress of the community depends on the greatness of its human resources,” he added.
