PPA to have buoys at Tacloban port entry points
TACLOBAN CITY — The Philippine Ports Authority is hoping to have buoys at entry points of the Port of Tacloban.
PPA Port Manager Winfred G. Elizalde said that even though it is not the work of PPA to make the move on having these buoys, their agency is willing to tie up with the Philippine Coast Guard to put up these buoys.
These buoys are the floating objects like styrofoam with flags attached that are placed on the seas to guide moving ships especially during nighttime.
Elizalde added that the disadvantage of not having these buoys is that the ship captains refuse to bring in their ships after four o’ clock in the afternoon because it will take almost two hours to navigate their ships along the San Juanico Strait to the Port of Tacloban.
But before anything else, he said the sizes of the ships should be considered before putting up these buoys because ships that are passing through the San Juanico Strait should not exceed 120 meters long because it will be very hard to navigate.
He also pointed out that the vertical clearances for ships passing through the San Juanico Bridge should also be considered.
Elizalde hoped that there would be an allocated budget for the buoys, for them to be able to accomplish this project. (Herlizandra S. Castro-LNU Intern)
