PALO, LEYTE — A veteran photographer of the government media-oriented organization here won one of the three categories in the photo exhibit competition that added glamour to this year’s Leyte landing celebration.
Jovino Cuayzon of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Regional Office based in Tacloban City went home last night a P 10,000.00-richer guy for winning first prize in the “Uniquely Leyte” category.
Vice-Governor Mimiette Bagulaya, along with other provincial officials, handed the cash prizes and the gift certificates during the awarding ceremony held at the Bethel International School in this historic town.
The other winners in the “Uniquely Leyte” category were Melchor Tagana, for the second prize, P 6,000.00, and Irwin Lanante, third prize, P 4,000.00.
Cuayzon, “Mano Vino” to friends, has long been known for his skill in capturing passing moments, events of meaning and glitter, and freeze them in the digital, celluloid world for posterity to marvel and appreciate.
His winning entry features the façade of the Leyte provincial capitol bathed on a moonlit night, the interplay of natural and neon lights showing the seat of power in the province at its majestic, awesome poise, with matching serene splendor.
It was in the steps of this capitol building where Gen. Douglas MacArthur, days after wading ashore on October 20, 1944, made official statements which significantly altered the course of Philippine history.
The 50-something Cuayzon has been with PIA since the martial law days when it was a Department of Public Information (DPI), to its incarnation as National Media Production Center (NMPC), Office of Media Affairs (OMA), and the post-EDSA 1 PIA organization up to the present.
For the Leyte Landings Site category, the winners were the following: First Prize — P 10,000.00, Oliver Norman Yu; Second Prize — P 6,000.00, Ryan Banez; and Third Prize — P 4,000.00, Paul Opiniano.
In the World War II Memorabilia category: First Prize – P 10,000.00, Jessical Mayo; Second Prize — P 6,000.00, Larry Abra; and Third Prize — P 4,000.00, Allan Arcallano.
The awarding rites were attended by foreign dignitaries as well as a number of American and Filipino World War II veterans, with the top ten surviving crop of the latter, now in their 90s, honored and presented with corresponding awards by Leyte Gov. Jericho Petella.
The photo exhibit competition was sponsored by the Colours Group of Leyte and the provincial government, it was learned. (PIA-Southern Leyte)
