NP to Noynoy’s camp: Stop speculating on May poll win
The camp of Nacionalista Party standard-bearer Sen. Manny Villar yesterday cautioned the camp of Noynoy Aquino from speculating the latter’s victory in the May elections.
“Don’t speak too soon about an Aquino win. The race for the presidency is still a long way,” NP senatorial candidate Adel Tamano said.
Tamano was reacting to a claim by Oriental Mindoro Rep. Alfonso Umali, an LP stalwart, that rivals cannot overtake Noynoy’s lead in poll surveys.
But in a recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey saw Aquino’s lead over closest rival Villar trimmed down to 11 percent, a development which some newspaper political analysts described as an indication that the presidential race is turning into an exciting electoral battle.
One columnist said that the recent survey shows that “Aquino cannot remain complacent resting on the EDSA 1 legacy of his mother, the late former president Corazon Aquino”and that it reveals that the “Cory magic is wearing thin as an electoral asset.”
In the December 27-29 SWS survey, Aquino garnered 44 percent, down from 46 percent in the December 5-10 national survey, SWS said. Villar placed second with 33 percent, up from 27 percent in the previous December 5-10 survey.
An interesting highlight in the survey was that Villar was the choice of the vote-rich Northern-Central Luzon, where Aquino has enjoyed a big support in previous SWS surveys. SWS said Villar garnered 41.33 percent in the region, trouncing Aquino who got 31.33 percent. Northern-Central Luzon represents 22.16 percent of the total respondents.
In the previous December 5-10 SWS survey, Aquino gained big support in the region when he garnered 43.33 percent. Villar was second with 30.67 percent.
The SWS survey titled “presidential preference for the 2010 elections,” had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.2 percent. It was commissioned by House Minority Leader San Juan Rep. Ronaldo Zamora.
The respondents were asked: “From the following list of names, who are you likely to vote for as President of the Philippines, if elections were held today?” (PR)
