Mussels from Samar start to regenerate
CATBALOGAN, Samar — After almost two years of insufficient supply in Samar, mussels in Jiabong town have started to regenerate.
This was observed by PIA in Jiabong town as street vendors have started enticing motorists to buy cultured mussels the past few weeks.
This was also confirmed by Sangguniang Bayan member Placida Jabien during the Barangay Education Strategic Team (BEST) summit in Jiabong town.
Jabien said that the industry is slowly recovering after experiencing some kind of a plague in the past.
In Barangay Alejandria, some families were unable to send their children back to school because the mussel farms did not yield the expected produce.
“ Our efforts on coastal clean-up have paid off,” said Jabien.
In a joint effort with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), the farmers were able to haul 37 truckloads of garbage and pollutants from the 67 hectares of mussel farms in Jiabong town.
“That was early last year, in May the so-called spats (young mussels) started to sprout, “ added Jabien.
Mussel farmers now are able to deliver to Manila and Davao, according to the town official.
“But we have not (fully) recovered…yet, “ stressed Jabien.
With the new technology of raft method being adopted by farmers, coupled with the implementation of sustainable farming, mussels will soon return to the multi-million industry that jiabong Samar has been known for. (Ninfa B. Quirante)
