Mayor Samaco Bares Special Concern on the Plight of PWDs
MAASIN CITY — The city government has been contemplating to provide express lanes for persons with disabilities (PWDs) and senior citizens paying their personal bills at Southern Leyte Electric Cooperative (SOLECO) or transacting business with the banks.
In fact, a legislative measure for this purpose has been pending at the Sangguniang Panlunsod (SP) awaiting furher action, according to City Mayor Maloney Samaco.
Samaco shared this piece of information yesterday, October 14, during the 3rd Regional Committee and Disability Affairs (RCDA) quarterly conference held at the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), this city.
He said the initiative was a tangible indication that the city cares for its special sector, the differently-abled persons.
A sports enthusiast, Samaco said he even has plans to conduct a paralympics for disabled individuals next year, most probably after the elections.
“In this manner, a PWD’s morale can be boosted, assuring him/her a place in society, and enabling the concerned individual to live an ordinary, normal life despite the physical condition,” Samaco stressed.
And to prove his word that he cares for this special social group, Samaco agreed to host the Regional Singing competion slated to be held on November 25, in which the winner will represent Region 8 in a nationwide singing tilt on December 12.
Henceforth, any region-wide activity of the PWDs which will be held in Maasin City will have the Mayor’s, and the SP’s, stamp of support, Samaco assured.
He pledged to look into implementing specific actions based on PWD-welfare laws, particularly on accessibility in buildings, private establishments, and offices, adding that the next design of the city hall during its expansion phase will certainly have a ramp for easy movement of wheelchair-bound PWDs.
Among the participants attending the RCDA were representatives from Ormoc, Calbayog, and Borongan local government units, representatives from national line agencies, Febis Sta. Cruz, the City Social Welfare Officer, the host office, and several members of the PWD association in Maasin City led by Rolando Ambe, President of the Region 8 Federation of PWDs.
The conference was presided by Ben Calzado, the focal person for PWD program of the Regional DSWD Office. (PIA-Southern Leyte)
