Govt troops discover NPA camp in N. Samar after brief firefight
TACLOBAN CITY — At least seven persons believed to be members of the New People’s Army and an undetermined number of rebels were reported to have been seriously wounded in an encounter in Northern Samar the other day.
Lt. Col. Armand Rico in his report to Army’s 8th ID commanding officer Major General Arthur Tabaquero said that the military troops belonging to the 63rd Infantry Battalion headed by Lt. Charstone Villarin responded an information coming from the residents of Barangay Osmena, Las Navas, Northern Samar of the presence of the armed rebels collecting food stuff, subsequently discovered en encampment at the forested area in the said village some 5 kilometers away from the town proper of Las Navas occupied by an estimated 30 NPA rebels.
The said operation resulted in a ten-minute firefight between the NPAs and the government troops that forced the group of armed rebels to withdraw towards the south direction of the encounter scene.
The operating troops, according to Lt. Col. Rico, recovered from the NPA camp one EID combat pack, subversive documents with intelligence value, and a clearing mine operations.
“The rebels really suffered heavy casualties witnessed by the barangay residence and bloodstains in the encounter site, but negative from the government side,” Rico said.
Two days before this encounter, the operatives of the 34th IB also discovered an NPA camp in a remote barangay in Paranas Samar, where some facilities in the underground movement operation were recovered including some subversive documents. (MIRIAM GARCIA DESACADA)
