Five Southern Leyte LGUs To Get Composting Facilities
By Bong Pedalino
SOUTHERN LEYTE — Five local government units (LGUs) from this province will be the recipients of a composting facility, one per LGU, from the Department of Agriculture (DA) as soon as the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for such an undertaking can be finalized.
Marina Gador, OIC Provincial Agriculturist, disclosed that the launching for the distribution of these composing units can be had “anytime this year,” adding that the units are already available in the DA Regional office.
The five beneficiary LGUs will be Maasin City, Sogod, Libagon, Hinundayan, and Hinunangan.
Gador told PIA in a phone interview last week that the five recipient LGUs qualified the requirement for at least 100 heactares each of riceland for one composting facility.
A composting facility cost P 700,000.00 with a matching vermi-culture or cultured worms to hasten composting work of biodegradable farm wastes.
The LGU counterpart was a 500 squre meter lot to serve as the housing site for the entire composting unit.
Gador said this program of the agriculture department will be a big help for farmers to minimize costs in farm inputs.
At the same time, this can lessen farmers’ dependence on purely commerical fertilizers by using instead the organic fertilizer — the end product of the composting facility, Gador added. (PIA-Southern Leyte).
