DTI report: no fake Christmas lights sold in Tacloban City

TACLOBAN CITY – Citing monitoring reports, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) claims that the city’s market is free from trade of fake Christmas lights.

Felix Cinco, chief of the DTI regional consumer welfare division, said that despite of that they still step up their monitoring to ensure that fake products from the National Capital Region won’t be sold in Eastern Visayas .

“In our monitoring since October, we prioritized those stores reportedly selling fake Christmas lights but we have found out that they have proper markings with corresponding ICC (Import Commodity Clearance) numbers,” Cinco told Leyte Samar Daily Express.

The DTI personnel normally checks ICC numbers and see if it matches with their list they got from their central office in Metro Manila.

“After purchasing Christmas lights, the people can check with the local DTI office if the product is genuine by comparing ICC numbers,”

Cinco advises consumers to purchase Christmas lights with Philippine Standard (PS) mark for local products and ICC marks with ICC number for imported products on the packaging of the products.

Aside from ensuring the product quality, the DTI also check the price of Christmas lights in the market.

Cinco said that they started doing the price monitoring from September to December because Christmas light is one of the products focused by the DTI for their monitoring activities.

Under the law, the store that violate will be penalized with a minimum of P25,000 up to P300,000 depending on the circumstances. (SARWELL Q. MENIANO)
