DPWH kicks off 20 days Christmas Extravaganza 2009
PALO, Leyte – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) kicked off this week the 20 days Christmas Extravaganza 2009 full with lights, talent showcase and gift giving to children.
Tonette Lim, DPWH regional information officer, said that the Christmas Park in the regional office compound at the Government Center of this town will be opened to the public every night until December 20.
“Every night, a district engineering office will be a host to entertain people who wants to relish the Christmas spirit this holiday season,” Lim said in an interview.
With DPWH Secretary Victor Domingo, Undersecretaries Rafael Yabut, Jaime Pacanan, and other top officials of the department as guests, district engineering offices unveiled Christmas lanterns made of native raw materials depicting products of Eastern Visayas.
They were heard by regional employees saying that their office is not just building roads and bridges but also building hopes for less privileged people.
During the first night of the 20-day extravaganza, at least 1,000 gift packs were distributed to children from poor families. The public was entertained with talent presentations of regional office staff.
A “Belen” was installed at the second floor of the main building. The building walls, trees, plants at the DPWH compound have been covered with Christmas lights and spectacular Christmas tree.
The activity was initiated since last year by DPWH Regional Director Angelito Twaño, who hails from Pampanga. “This is the DPWH’s contribution to make the public feel the spirit of Christmas,” he said. (SARWELL Q. MENIANO)
