DOLE marks 76th anniversary today

TACLOBAN CITY — The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) regional office will mark the 76th anniversary of their agency with the hope of “sustaining industrial peace and greater productivity in the light of global economic crisis.”

DOLE regional director Forter Puguon said that the celebration this year is simple than in the previous years since their central office wants them to reflect on the challenges that they’ve been facing in the past years.

“There’s no jobs fair in our anniversary unlike last year,” Puguon said.

He said that since 2003, there were no major labor strikes in Eastern Visayas and this was not a result of compulsion but by the “growing maturity of both workers and employers.”

“We are looking forward to sustain industrial peace by working with those in the labor and business sectors,” he added.

Employees of the labor department from all over the region will gather at the Hotel Alejandro in this city for the launching of their tree planting activity in response to climate change. The activity is part of the DOLE’s Green Jobs, Green Workplace Program.

The entire DOLE family which comprises the National Labor Relations Commission–Fourth Division, National Labor Relations Commission-Regional Arbitration Branch, National Conciliation and Mediation Board, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, Professional Regulatory Commission, Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board, Philippine Overseas Employment Agency, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, and Regional Public Employment Services Office Managers Association will be one in upholding the agency’s advocacy of promoting and enhancing green job opportunities.

The 100 trees are initially planned for planting in the region’s key watershed areas.

To recall, DOLE started as a small bureau in 1908. It became a department on December 8, 1933 with the passage of Republic Act No. 4121.

The DOLE stands as a national agency mandated to formulate policies, implement programs and services, and serve as policy-coordinating arm of the executive branch in the field of labor and employment.

Its organization and functions are in accordance with the provisions of Executive Order No. 126, as amended, or the Labor Code of the Philippines, and other pertinent legislations. (Sarwell Q. Meniano)
