Biliran representative expresses confidence to win in 2010 polls

TACLOBAN CITY – Despite facing a formidable opponent, reelectionist Biliran Representative Glenn Chong expressed confidence that voters in the province will choose him again to represent them in Congress.

Chong said that because of his many accomplishments in the two years since assuming office, he remains optimistic of his chances come May 2010.

Chong, who is seeking a second term under the banner of Lakas-Kampi-CMD, will be facing three-termer Biliran Governor Rogelio “Roger” Espina of the Nacionalista Party (NP).

“I fought very hard to defend the interests of my provincemates and bring development projects to the province. I know that Biliranons will not forget what I have done for them in such a short time,” he said.

According to the freshman solon, since his term started in 2007 he was able to implement numerous programs and projects, particularly infra, in his province.

Chong specifically cited the construction of five national roads in the province worth P28 million, completion of two major flood control projects costing P5 million, construction of 12 school buildings worth P5 million, concreting of Naval-Caibiran cross-country road, rehabilitation of the Biliran Bridge that amounted to P83 million, and the implementation of P15 million worth farm-to-market road projects.

Chong also said that he was able to do a lot for the education sector in Biliran.

Citing a report from his office, Chong was instrumental in the conversion of the Naval Institute of Technology (NIT) into a university, successfully implemented the free school bus system, and donated schoolbags to 27, 000 students in Biliran province.

Chong further said that his optimism was buoyed by an internal survey which showed that he was well ahead of his nearest opponent.

“In the survey I was 27 points ahead of the governor,” he said.

Chong, a CPA-lawyer whose family owns several big businesses in Biliran, rose to prominence when he defeated then-Congressman Gerry Espina, Sr., the governor’s father, in the bitterly-fought 2007 congressional race.

Biliran has more than 250, 000 registered voters in eight municipalities. The eight towns comprising the province are Naval, Caibiran, Cabucgayan, Biliran, Kawayan, Maripipi Culaba and Almeria. (JOSE RODRIGUEZ T. SEñASE)
