3rd SWM Summit for EV slated on Nov. 18-19

TACLOBAN CITY – The 3rd Solid Waste Management (SWM) Summit for Eastern Visayas slated on November 18-19, 2009 will focus on deliberations and sharing of experiences on the most advanced waste technologies and waste management best practices, highlighting among others the Zero Waste Management Program of Tabontabon town in Leyte.

Environment Management Bureau 8 Regional Director Letecia Maceda said the summit as a yearly activity seeks to provide the local government executive, solid waste managers and decision-makers and opportunity to look at challenges and trends in solid waste management and find ways to replicate the technologies relevant to their needs.

The main objective of the event is to provide support services to local government units and all sectors of society in the implementation and sustainability of solid waste management initiatives through transfer of technical know-how, technical assistance and networking.

Not only will there be discussions and exchange in the sustainable implementation of the solid waste management program, but the expected local government participants would be part of an ocular tour to Tabontabon’s zero waste management program- one of the region’s best solid waste management practices.

Tabontabon, to recall, through Mayor Rustico Balderian, has launched a program to change the mindset of their people that “trash can be turned into cash”. It has started implementing a zero-waste management program where gathered trash are recycled or turned into fertilizers.

Earlier Mayor Balderian said implementing zero waste lifestyle would also help curb discharges that threaten the environment.

Among the other highlight in this year’s 3rd Regional Ecology Center-8 Solid Waste Management Summit is the two-day exhibit featuring SWM recycled products, technologies and other innovations.

Another highlight activity is Dinner Show cum Fellowship Night that will feature a Fashion Show with the theme “Managing Wastes in Fashion” where models will showcase gowns and accessories made out of recycled materials.

This year’s REC-8 SWM Summit carries the theme “Sustaining Waste Reduction through Recycling, Education and Composting: Our Regional Action to Climate Change Mitigation.” All of the activities for the summit would be held mainly at the DPWH Multi-Purpose Hall. (AHLETTE C. REYES)
