2 Army soldiers killed in NPA attack
TACLOBAN CITY- Two members of the engineering battalion of the 8th Infantry Division were killed during an attack staged by members of the New People’s Army last Thursday morning in a remote village of Calbiga.
The two fatalities were identified as Private First Class Gilbert Dabuet and Private Fred Baluyot who sustained several bullet wounds during an attack staged by a group of NPA rebels.
Lieutenant Colonel Armand Rico, information officer of the 8th ID, said that the attack staged by about 10 fully armed rebels took place in Brgy. Binanggaran, some 15 kilometers away from Calbiga town center.
According to Rico, the two soldiers were part of the engineering battalion who were in the area to do a school building project in Brgy. Binanggaran. But around 9:50 in the morning, a group of armed men trained their firearms against the government troops, who managed to fire back that resulted to a 10-minute gun battle.
The skirmish resulted to the death of the two soldiers whose remains were immediately brought to the mortuary of the 8th ID which is located in Catbalogan.
Major General Arthur Tabaquero, commanding general of the 8th ID, condemned the brutality committed against the engineering group.
“Their services towards our people and their heroism will not be futile forever for they died for the sake of our people and for the sake of peace and development that are long deprived by the terrorist rebels in the province,” Tabaquero, speaking through his information officer Rico, said.
Hot pursuit operation was immediately ordered by Tabaquero against the rebels who escaped after the incident. (JOEY A. GABIETA)
